When to Order Your Wedding Invitations (A Simple Timeline)

Wedding stationery takes longer than most couples expect, because it is not just printing time. You also need to settle the wording, finish the design, check a proof, print, and allow for delivery. Working backwards from your wedding date keeps everything calm.

The timings below are general guidance. Every wedding is different, so if you have a tight deadline, tell your printer as early as possible.

Save the dates let guests lock in the day, which matters most for weddings with travel, a busy season, or a destination venue. Many couples send them 8 to 12 months before the wedding, and sooner if lots of guests need to book flights or accommodation.

You only need your date, location and names to order them, so they are a good first project.

Invitations commonly go out roughly 8 to 12 weeks before the wedding, with a reply-by date about 3 to 4 weeks before it. To post them then, aim to start designing around 3 to 4 months before the wedding so you are not rushing proofs.

Menus, place cards, order of service, signage and seating charts depend on your final guest list and dietary needs, so they come last. Once RSVPs are in, aim to finalise them about 4 to 6 weeks before the wedding.
